Revealed Almost 140 Million Dollars was invested in Russia film production in 2014

CANNES – THURSDAY 14TH MAY 2015: Today ROSKINO marked the official opening of the Russian Film Pavilion, located at VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL #135, by announcing a strong line-up of industry events to support Russia’s film industry at the Cannes International Film Festival. Roskino CEO Katya Mtsitouridze joined Vyacheslav Telnov, Head of the Cinema Department of the Russian Ministry of Culture, and Anton Malyshev, Executive Director of Cinema Fund, at the Russian Pavilion to announce this year’s programme.

Activities commenced with a presentation of the Annual Report 2014 and Russian Film Industry Guide KINOBOOK-2014 and it was revealed that almost 140 million dollars was invested, by the Department of the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Cinema Fund, into Russian film production over the course of last year, with reforms to state support leading to increased government funding and private investment into the industry. The investment was rewarded with an increased number of domestic premieres, and the release of acclaimed films such as the Academy Award®-nominated LEVIATHAN, THE POSTMAN’S WHITE NIGHTS, THE FOOL, CORRECTIONS CLASS, and YES AND YES.

The pavilion will serve as the hub of the Russian Film Industry at Cannes, promoting Russian cinema at the market and acting as an information point for the nation’s attending filmmakers. It is set to host an eclectic range of press conferences, panels, and debates from a wide variety of industry experts and guest speakers.

Katya Mtsitouridze stated: ‘Russia remains one of the film world’s great creative centres, with our filmmakers continuing to push the boundaries and produce internationally-acclaimed artworks, aided by steadfast government backing and private investment. We are delighted to once again be here at the world’s most prestigious film festival, and look forward to showcasing the latest crop of stunning Russian product laden with global appeal.’

Mtsitouridze confirmed that tomorrow’s Presentation of Russian projects looking for co-production would include the titles ZOOLOGY, PHILISOPHICAL STEAMER, CITY OF BIRDS, ADOLESCENCE ID, LENIN, EMPIRE V, and BEIRUT produced by esteemed director Fedor Bondarchuk.

The upcoming Focus on New Russian Cinema 2015 will present a selection of the country’s newest films to distributors, sales agents, festival organizers and press for the very first time. Attendees can expect to see RAG UNION, directed by Mikhail Mestetskiy; PUPPET’S SYNDROME, directed by Elena Hazanova; KRASNY (RED), directed by Nickolay Sarkisov; LOCUST, directed by Egor Baranov; KIKORIKI: LEGEND OF THE GOLDEN DRAGON, directed by Denis Chernov; and Andrey Kim’s CLOSER THAN APPEAR (ALMANAC).

Additionally, on Monday 18th May, Roksino will host a Presentation of Global Russians conference – a showcase of the best Russian short films presented in the Short Film Corner of the Cannes Marche du Film. This year, the five shorts come from students of Alexander Sokurov of Kabardino-Balkarian State University.
