ALL EYES ON RUSSIAN CINEMA AS MARCHÉ DU FILM HEADLINERS ROSKINO UNVEIL 2016 PAVILLION LINE-UP


CANNES – THURSDAY 12TH MAY 2016: Today ROSKINO marked the official opening of the Russian Film Pavilion, located at VILLAGE INTERNATIONAL #139, by announcing a strong line-up of industry events to support Russia’s film industry at the Cannes International Film Festival. Roskino CEO Katya Mtsitouridze joined Joel Chapron, selector of the Cannes Film Festival in Eastern Europe and Russia, at the Russian Pavilion to announce this year’s programme.


Roskino has this year partnered with the Marche du Film, in making the Russian Film Industry a key focus of this year’s Festival. With a roster of events scheduled at the Russian Pavilion to take place from 12th – 19th, Roskino aims to present new projects, developments and trends from the territory from Cannes favorites including Camera D’Or Jury Member Alexander Rodnyansky and Un Certain Regard filmmaker Ilya Stewart. Katya Mtsitouridze highlighted Russian cinema’s continued healthy return to industry audiences; with 2015 Box Office figures rising by 1million RUB on 2014 figures, while stressing the continued growth and appetite for local product, with 98 locally produced titles showcased from the territory in 2015.


Katya Mtsitouridze stated: “We are thrilled to be back in Cannes as we once again take the opportunity to bring the latest sensational fare emerging from our country to the fore. There is no greater honour than to partner with the Marché du Film, as we come together to shine a spotlight on Russian cinema.”


Unveiling the 2016 line-up, Mtsitouridze announced that tomorrow will see the Presentation of Global Russians conference – a showcase of the best Russian short films presented in the Short Film Corner of the Cannes Marche du Film. This year, the event will include five shorts by students spanning WordShop Academy of Communications, VGIK, RATI, Sverdlovsk College of Arts and Culture, College of Arts and Sciences (Cambridge, UK) and Ravensbourne College (London, UK).


In addition, the 14th May will see the anticipated Presentation of Russian projects looking for co-production, including the titles from Un Certain Regard filmmaker Illya Stewart (The Student); award-winning actress and director Vera Glagoleva (Two Women); Ella Manzheeva (Chaiki); Natalia Mokritskaya (The Battle For Sevastopol), amongst others.


Finally, Mtsitouridze confirmed that on the 15th May, the upcoming Focus on New Russian Cinema 2016 will present a selection of the country’s newest films to distributors, sales agents, festival organizers and press for the very first time. Attendees can expect to see titles from Camera D’Or Jury Member Alexander Rodnyansky, Ilya Stewart, actress Alisa Khazanova and the team behind The Battle for Sebastopol, amongst others.


Attendees to the opening gala included producers and co-owners of Art Pictures Studio Fyodor Bondarchuk and Dmitry Rudovsky; CEO of Russian World Studios, Yury Sapronov; Eurimages representative in Russia Leonid Demchenko; actress, director Vera Glagoleva and her co-producer Natalia Ivanova; TVzavr CEO Marina Surygina; curator of the festival programs Andrey Plakhov; TV host and film critic Anton Dolin; producer Perova Anastasia.

  • Listening to Beethoven by Garri Bardin. Presentation of the animated short, participant of the Director’s Fortnight program

ROSKINO plays a key role in assisting the country’s filmmakers and producers with their commercial releases abroad, promoting Russian films at major international film festivals, markets, and awards, and working to facilitate co-operation and participation in the opposite direction by encouraging International filmmakers to venture to Russia’s own festivals and events.
